Libya Unrest Shocks Markets

Libya tensions sent fresh shockwaves across financial markets on Thursday, as equities fell, oil soared close to $120 and the dollar plunged to a record low against the safe-haven Swiss franc.

Europe’s main stock markets extended recent losses, with sentiment plagued by Libya where leader Moamer Kadhafi is clinging onto power but his opponents appear to be in control of swathes of the nation.

As G20 finance minsters meet in Paris, Bill Gates has been charged with finding ways to raise funds for the poorest countries by French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy has commissioned the Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates to examine new ways of raising cash for the world’s poorest countries, as G20 finance ministers gather in Paris.

S&P says France likely to keep top credit rating

Standard & Poor’s affirmed France’s AAA credit rating on Thursday, saying it believed the country would do what was necessary to meet its budget deficit target despite concerns among investors about its debt.

S&P also said it had no plans to change the rating.

France cites Google advertising as “possible” abuse

Google abuseFrance’s Competition Authority said Tuesday that Google occupies a strongly dominant position in the online advertising market linked to Internet searches and that it possibly violated competition law.

Following a review requested by the government, the FCA said it “considers that Google holds a dominant position on the advertising market linked to search engines.”

Insider dealing in France: Airbus

The A380 ran into technical problems in 2006 that drastically affected EADS’s share price.

Airbus’s chief operating officer, John Leahy, and its former human resources director Erik Pillet have been charged with insider trading by an investigating judge in Paris.

Leahy and Pillet have been under investigation for some weeks after being called in for questioning. Leahy was cleared last year, with other executives, in a separate inquiry into similar charges by France’s stock market regulator.

Google bid to buy Groupon ‘fails’

Online discount shopping site Groupon has rejected a multi-billion-dollar takeover bid by Internet search giant Google, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The Tribune cited sources close to the matter as saying the Chicago-based startup decided to remain independent. Google was believed to be offering more than five billion dollars for Groupon.
