Fluoride may now be added to foods manufactured and supplied in Europe. It’s been classified as a harmless supplement, according to Europe’s highest authority on food standards.
The decision means that food manufacturers can include sodium monofluorophosphate in their products. This is the common form of fluoride found in toothpaste and mouth washes.
The decision, by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), has angered the consumer pressure group Alliance for Natural Health (ANH). ANH is asking for an immediate enquiry.
Dr. Damien Downing, the ANH’s medical director, says: “It’s bad enough brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth with fluoride. But opening up its usage to food supplements, when it’s very difficult to control how much other fluoride a person is being exposed to, is utterly irresponsible.”
ANH is also concerned that the EFSA is working outside of its remit. It argues that as fluoride has supposed medicinal qualities, the decision to include it in foods is one that should be taken by the European Medicines Agency.
How do you feel about having yet more chemicals added to your food?

I have learnt recently about a scientific study which concluded that extensive use of fluoride in food and in some case adolescent dentistry may harm the physiology of some internal organs (especially kidneys). Could you comment on this?

It has long been believed that fluoride is cleared from the body within 3 to 4 hours. But studies from as far back as 1991 (Journal of American Medical Association 266:513) show that fluoride has an affinity with bones and it has been linked to the development of osteoporosis and higher levels of hip fracture.
Recent studies show that healthy kidneys can only eliminate about 50% of daily fluoride intake. So, only drinking water containing fluoride at the dosage of 4 ppm (the maximum allowable) may lead to toxic accumulations within the body within 38 years.
This does not take into account the fluoride contained in toothpastes, which is at a much higher level. Nobody knows for certain what the long term effects of such on the body may be.
To now be adding it to our food seems an incredible folly.
I don’t think I would like that idea too much at all! I agree there is too much stuff added in most foods already…plus I would really be concerned about people getting too much of it! Doesn’t sound like a good idea at all!

Here in Queensland they just legislated late last year that they will be putting flouride in our water – the world has gone mad!! When will it all stop – perhaps with our children’s children will they wake up and stop reinventing the wheel again and again.

Our water treatment system already adds flouride to our water. I don’t think it is a good idea for food manufacturers to add more.
We called and talked to our water plant when our children were small. They are very aware of the proper quantities, taking into consideration that we get flouride in our toothpaste. Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing!

Kevin,
It sounds like you are a supporter of ANH? That is great, I am too. I also am a very proud member of the Life Extension Foundation.
I have to admit it is sounding more and more like the socialistic medicine mindset(for the good of all, right?) keeps sneaking its way into every single persons natural born right(something many governments love to ignore) to take care of themselves.
I have to think of those poor Australians, whose government is supposedly protecting(from what, vitamin c?). Now the EU is on a crash course to follow. What a joke.
Thanks for propagating the truth… it is a tough fight, and one that will most likely never end.
I’m dead set against it. If anything our food is over processed and has more chemicals in it than I would like. I make, amongst other things my own sauce and even though it contains no preservatives I have some that is over 5 years old and it’s still perfectly OK. Makes you wonder why the sauce you buy in the supermarkets, that are full of preservatives and other junk, only has a shelf life of a few months.

It’s bad enough they are taking most of the nutrients out of our food. But to be adding more chemicals in the name of science is just ridiculous.

It’s unbelievable considering the toxicity involved with flouride…well they’ll be taxing us into the poor house, might as well kill us while they’re at it!
Hi Kevin –
This is shocking news. Thanks for sharing it with us in today’s Fight Back Fridays carnival!

This news had opened my eyes. We need to be careful now. Thanks for the post.
Interesting observation with injecting fluoride into food. Kinda worries me about our food supply, but for those who do not brush enough, I spose it is ok.

While everyone’s trying to lessen their consumption of preservatives and additives, I don’t think that adding some fluoride in food would sound appealing. Heard about the vinegar without the acetic acid and the coffee without the caffeine (corn coffee)? These kinds of products try to address the market’s need to do away with preservatives and other additives. So while fluoride might be needed in the body (in small amounts) putting it intentionally in my food could still be a far-fetched idea.
