What is the best way of going about learning a new language?

I want to learn French again. I live in Canada so in middle and high school, they made me learn French. Sadly, I stopped taking French classes in my last years in high school so I forgot a lot of it! After meeting a few friends from Paris while I was in NYC, I’m motivated to learn French again. I’m planning to move to the US in the future and I want to establish myself as a Canadian who knows English and French!

Generally speaking, what is the best way of going about learning a new language like French? Books and CD’s are for sure a good idea. I also heard watching French movies and shows help as well. Going to an actual country that speaks French I heard helps too, but I don’t plan on going to France anytime soon. I might go to Montreal (a city that a majority speak French) so that’s a possibility. Any other suggestions you guys may have?

Stewart McIntosh answers:

I think that the most practical thing would be French. You want to move to France in the future, so you will need to knowledge of the language. To be in full command of a foreign language takes time, so you better start now. You do not have to follow your friends and do whatever they do, you must work on your interest and what is going to be useful for you. Taking a class is not a social thing, you do not get enrolled in a class because your friends are in and the teacher is amazing, you do because it is a subject that you will be using in your career. French is a nice language, so don’t think it twice.

Stewart McIntosh answers:

With your versatility in foreign language, you might be a great public relations or foreign relations representative for some big corporation. You might also want to work in something diplomatic that would allow you to use your language skills. Or you might be able to work for a publishing company translating materials from their original language into other languages. You might also want to consider teaching. Your skill with languages would be very useful in education. Or you could work in the travel industry. Wow, there’s a lot of options. You’re wise to be considering your future now, because you may think of additional courses you would want to take to help prepare you for whatever you choose. Contact businesses that sound interesting to you and ask what is involved in these positions and if there are more classes they would want you to have in order to consider you for employment in their business.

unusual nightmare meaning?

I had a dream last night and here it is:
I was sitting and throwing tennis balls at this gas station with a random person from my french class and my friend I haven’t seen in a while, Kim. After a while, I realized I had to go to a movie showing. I arrived, it was at an old place. i saw my friend sabah so I sat next to her. In front of us was a table but no food was on there. (it was set up like there was supposed to be plates glasses etc.) the movie started, and 2 kids came in late, peanut butter and jelly. (those are their nicknames. their real names were john and kennedy). I was hired to spank them so the faculty kicked us down into a basement sort of thing. we were falling down the stairs unitl i caught my balance. PB&J fell into the darkness. I started walking up the stairs, but found out the door was locked. so i walked down to find the kids. i went into a hallway to find 3 doors. inside one was an empty closet, the other a normal public bathroom the 3rd an old bathroom with a normal looking middle-aged blonde guy in there wearing a light blue button down shirt, sleeves rolled up. i started asking him if hes seen john and kennedy. he looked at me and slowley raised his wrist, which was cut up and bloody. I wasn’t scared and I walked away. then, i saw a little box thing. there was writing on there, but I couldn’t make it out. i opened it up and 2 onions were in there. i walked back to the normal stairs and i planned to walk upstairs next. before, i saw a skeleton/human thing on the stairs but just ignored it. (the place i was in was all black, the only thing you could see were old wooden stairs, which i was obvioulsy walking on). I started walking up the stairs and walked by the human/skel thing and said “excuse me”. the h/s thing said “the rest of the wood is made of body parts”. i said i didn’t care, i just came to spank some little kids. i held up the spanker thing. he said he didn’t see any kids. i grabbed a rope and swung myself to another piece of wood,. there were just illustrated pics of muscles and bones so i wasnt grossed out (like the ones you find in a biology book). i kept on swinging through , looking for john and kennedy. i saw boxes w. illustrated pictures of body parts on there. on there, it had celebirty names.

yeah, that’s all i remember. but heres a little background info on my life:
i recently had a dream about my best friend ignoring me.
i just started really liking a guy, but he is older than me so it makes me sad i cant go out w/ him.
family life is good, but im sad i have to go back to school in 2 days (winter break is ending).
i normaly dont have nightmares like this. most of the time, my dreams are happy.
the kid from my french class i dont know very well
i dont know john and kennedy, or the blonde guy in the bathroom.they were just in my dream.
the human/ skeleton thing kind of looked like a human head with muscles but bones sticking out if you want a visual.
OH MY GOD i just realized that john and kennedy were like john f kennedy! well, i dont get how that happened, but i dont think it had to do with the prez. i know a lot of guys named john, and my friend’s last name is kennedy, so maybe thats it.

You haven’t known him for a very long time, so he may not be ready for sex.

If you feel that he loves you, you love him, and both of you are ready for this, invite him to your house in a sexy, seducing voice, telling him you have a surprise. To prepare for when he comes, put on make-up, erotic lingerie, and a overcoat. Decorate the bedroom with flower pedals and candles. When he comes, slowly kiss him. Tell him he looks exhausted, and lead him into your bedroom while asking if he wants to take a nap. Kiss his neck. Slowly start to take off your overcoat, while kissing him, exposing your lingerie. Reach your hand down to his pants to see if he is hard. If he is, start to unzip his pants. Make sure he isn’t trying to stop you. Pull him down into your bed and remove the rest of his clothing. He’ll get the hint.

Stewart McIntosh answers:

I’m not so sure he could do it now. This is the second Tour de France without him, he has been away from the sport for two years now and not training for cycling. Granted, he is amazing, but cycling is a highly specialized sport and it takes a long time to get into tour winner condition. I would say he would have to ride an entire season first, then maybe he could have a crack at it, but then he would be getting up there in age and that may hurt him as well. I don’t doubt that he could have won a few more, but that would have had to continue from his last win, to have a layoff and then come back, that’s a different story.

Is Lance Armstrong being dealt a fair hand in regard to the rampant doping in cycling?

The Times noted in an article a few months ago that 16 out of the last 18 winners of the tour de france were under investigation for use of performance enhancing drugs. None of those winners had the success of Armstrong and most were probably far more liked within the sport. By Armstrong’s own admission, he wasn’t a very nice person to those around him. My point is that he was clearly targeted to be brought down and very likely for those reasons.
But we’re left with a 25 year stretch where the leaders of the sport likely cheated. Most of the greats in that 25 year period have at least some evidence against them (Thus the investigations that are going on or have gone on). So we vacate Armstrong’s titles and just ignore the likelyhood that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place riders just didn’t get caught yet or don’t have enough people to hate them to turn them in?

They add all of the stage times of the rider together. The overall winner has the lowest compiled time.
Racers plan a strategy of winning the longer stages and helping their overall time. Since the race is around 3000 miles, most racers can’t sustain constant sprinting. Some of those stages are in the Alps (12-15% hill climbs), so everybody is going slow on those.

When will the cheating in sports stop?

As the most profitable sport in America, the NFL has the prime opportunity to set an example for all other sports on how it deals with cheaters. The question is, what will the NFL commissioner Goodell do? A different perspective is, should all cheating incidents be treated the same? Compare this incident to players doping up in Baseball and the Tour de France. Except in this case, the evidence would suggest tthe actions went beyond an individual and was more of a team action. Should the Pats be let off the hook with this with a minor sanction, or should the NFL send a message to all atheletes, even beyond the football stadiums, that cheating, in any form will not be tolerated?

Stewart McIntosh answers:

The problem is flawed athletes in a flawed system. Can anyone list the bottom five teams in the NFL last year? Probably only if one of them happens to be your team. The fact of the matter is that people love winners. It is the culture of the world right now, and has been for a while. For every rule, there is often a written punishment that accompanies breaking that rule. Obviously that punishment should be implemented, but the problem with punishment systems currently is that they predominantly revolve around financial charges.

While $500,000 fine would put me bankrupt, Belichick makes an average of $2.8 million. Because of this heft fine, he will have to live off of a mere $2.3 million. The point being that if he looses games, he looses a job, so he will do what he has to do to win. And if you think about it, how many people have ever told a lie or done something immoral to avoid loosing a job?

I think a great punishment system would be a rejection of records. If a player is caught cheating, all the records from the period of time that the cheating happened would be eliminated. If a team gets caught, then every player looses the stats. After all, would they have thrown 5 touchdowns or ran 400 yards if they didn’t cheat? Who knows, but better safe than sorry when it comes to record keeping. I think that would be a punishment that the players would want to avoid. What good is cheating if you loose 3 seasons of records because you cheated that whole time?

I am of the older generation and saw my first low cut pants a few months ago. I noted my Nephews wear them like this and eventually found out the idea came from Convicts? As to why the fashion should be based on prisoners, is beyond me, but they look really funny. Anyway my nephew was wearing his jeans half way down, went to sit down on the chair and ripppppppppp! After all these years I saw what I only saw when I changed his diaper! I had been telling him to pull them up! Then I saw one poor fellow, teenager and assumed he had not made the toilet in time, so asked him if he was all right, did he need assistance? Poor man got all embarrassed seems these trousers that had like massive baggy legs were the fashion, but from a distance looked as if he had managed to soil himself. Few years ago we were in a Bar when two females came in and sat on the bar stools, revealing their designer G strings? The men I was with instantly stated they were slappers! I took their word for it. I guess the reason why the sperm count is down and so many males cannot have children is due to the fashion, problem being by the time they realise what they have done to themselves, it is too late!
My late Aunt came out with a good one. She was 87 and her Granddaughter who was training to be a Nurse, came in wearing low cut jeans. Aunt said to her Granddaughter ‘What is that string hanging off your trousers?’ Granddaughter replied ‘That is my thong’ Aunt replied ‘I would not insult my ass by wearing that!’ Aunt had a good point!

“…killing the charm and grace of the women’s game…”
My first statement in response to your ridiculous claim after quoting above the first blatant error in you statement, is that the Williams Sisters are two of the most brilliant tacticians to play tennis in the last few years: with their powerful ground-strokes, but also their often wonderful volleying (and so by extension grace); they bring to the sport a variety that is lacking in the game of the present women’s world number one for example.
As for their so called “…negative influence”, Serena and Venus are two of the most remarkably strong minded people on the women’s tour, and if that to you renders their influence on the game “…forever negative” because they are able to remain focused unlike those of a weak minded disposition, then I would encourage you to keep Your NEGATIVE opinions about the multiple grand slam champions to yourself.
Also, your statement is offensive in the extreme to the Williams Sisters; they may have an outspoken father who’s own opinions, like your own, border often upon the grotesque, but they do have feelings and your comments about them and their father are horrible. Would you yourself like it if someone whom you had never met insulted you, one of your siblings, and your father; I think not.

Add RAM:

This is especially true whenever my old PCs start running slower and are not able to bear the resource intensive software of these days. Computer keeps freezing when you have low RAM. Therefore, adding more RAM will fix your problem.

Limit Startup list:

Almost all of my computers that remained under my use had too many programs that start with the Windows start up. Due to this my every computer keeps on freezing.

To solve this problem, follow the steps given below.
1. Click on Start button.
2. Go to Run and type “msconfig” without quotes.
3. Press Enter.
4. Click on Startup and uncheck the programs that you no longer need.
5. Close System Configuration Utility.

Optimize Your System:

Another solution is to maintain your system on regular basis. Clean system junk and other unwanted data using some reliable PC optimizer program. Unwanted files are temporary system files, browser cache, browser history, system cache and others.

You can use some secured optimizer such as McAfee secured reginout.

Fix Windows Registry:

Registry is database where operating system stores information related to hardware configurations and all installed applications. Registry is very complex database and to identify and diagnose registry issues is difficult task. An easy way to fix registry related issues is using the registry repair tool. Search for reliable registry cleaner software download it.

Update Drivers:

You computer may freeze due to outdated drivers. Mostly sound and video card drivers are the source of the problem.

Scan System for Viruses:

It may be a virus that is creating problem for the operating system to work under normal conditions. You should have some powerful antivirus program installed in order to clean viruses.

Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldnt wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss
Chorus:

My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
Holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

And oh I couldnt understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn’t understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me
Made just for me

Just came back from few days vacation in France. Please bear in mind French speaks little English.

When you approach French, please remember not to say, “do you speak english?” As if you ask in that way, for sure you will be disappointed as they will tell you they can’t speak English altho they might speak English. French reluctance to use English/use little English as France had been clolonised by English long long time ago… Therefore they are in the stage of reluctance to adopt English culture.

Actually alot can be grabs in France especially their fashion (which is the top in the world)… If you are interested in perfume sort of thing then you can try to shop for that… Not to forget about the Wines in France…

I believe you know well about tourist spot in France and if you are not sure about that then please do not forget to get a copy of its city map when you arrive any city in France.

Do enjoy your holiday in France. Good luck…

Do the majority of French people secretly support or dislike the presence of Africans in France?

Stewart McIntosh answers:

On the whole France has a great tolerance to other races and nations.
However some people resent the number of Arabs that have settled in France simply because their culture is different and they expect the French to change things for them and adapt to their ways, rather than the other way round. Many are intransigent and treat their women badly, restricting their freedom. Some are quick with knives and revengeful. When there were just a few there were relatively few difficulties but now that there are large numbers, it has created real problems as they have become vociferous and demanding. This has given rise to insurrections in Paris and other large towns, with cars being set on fire and Molotov cocktails being thrown at the police, shops being ransacked, etc….They often decide to put themselves “on the fringes of society”, as you say, because they will not conform to French culture and laws, and have no wish to mix with the locals socially, consorting with people from the same ethnic origin and of the same creed as themselves. The younger immigrants are also often responsible for petty crimes, muggings etc…and this makes other people afraid, so there is a degree of avoidance for this reason too.
On the whole Black Africans living in France are good natured. There are fewer of them and they have integrated better.

As for the number of people in churches being white, African Muslims would see no need to go there as they are not interested in other cults than their own. However go to a street market in most towns and you will see a good number of women in Muslim dress or tribal traditional African dress, and some men too mixing with the local population.

Stewart McIntosh answers:

Well.. France is a really big country so you can’t go everywhere in just 7 days.. I sugest you to choose one region and to tour over there because if you wanna see everything, you’ll spend your holidays in the car (or train!) and you’ll miss the best stuff!
Better do a lot of things in a specific area and get to know the region.

Now about the places to go.. Well, as i live in Paris, i sugest you to go there because if you enjoy museums and historical buildings you’ll love it!

There’s also the French Riviera (Nice, Cannes, ..) where the countryside is gorgeous and you can visit museums and houses of great french artists like Renoir,Chagall or Matisse(but there is really lots of tourists and it’s hard to find a place to seat on the beach!)

Another nice place is the Atlantic Coast near the spanish’s border that we call “Pays Basque”. You can visit, on the north, the city called Bordeaux, and surf on the beaches near Biarritz and St Jean de Luz….

But there are also beautiful places in the Alps where you can do a lot of sport; in the center with the “Massif Central” (beautiful old mountains) ; or in the Northern Atlantic Coast like “Vendée”, “Normandie” and “Bretagne”..

There are historical places, museums and castles all over France so you just have to make your choice!

Most of french take vacation month 50% in july 50% in august (especially in paris), so july and august is really quiet in cities, except in south of france of course! Everybody goes in provence or french riviera…

What subjects and grades do I need to become a diplomat?

I wanna become a diplomat in either the UK, France, Iceland, USA or India.

Stewart McIntosh answers:

For your A-Levels I’d take Economics, History and a language. The grades don’t matter all that much as long as you get into a decent university.

At university I’d take a language combined with either politics, economics, philosophy or history. You’d need to get a 2:1 as your final grade.

I would recommend doing a master’s degree after that.

I would make sure you try and do as many internships as you can during uni. Try getting them abroad with international organisations, NGOs or think tanks.

Following this, thee are two routes you can take if you want to become a diplomat: 1) Career Diplomat and 2) Freelance

1)
to become a career diplomat, you need to take the Civil Service Faststream entry tests (http://faststream.civilservice.gov.uk/) which all professional grade government employees need to pass. This will require in the first stages taking tests on numeric and verbal reasoning, alongside in-tray exercises. Should you be successful here you’ll then be invited for further testing. These will require group tests and they’ll be watching your character. They look particularly for people with the ability to reconcile different opinions, not the loudest talker or the fastest to solve a problem. Then you’ll need to start on the Foreign Office track of testing. This is a difficult path to go down and competition is fierce. Should you be successful, you’ll be invited for intensive interviews with several different panels. You will also have to undergo medical examinations.

Get through all that (an extremely difficult task) and you will have a career for life as a diplomat. You won’t neccessarily get to chose which country you go to either (particularly when younger). As a junior, you are most likely going to be sent to some far-out embassy in Sub-Saharan Africa or Central Asia. As you get older you’ll be working in places of greater interest to the UK. The key places to work here are Washington, Brussels, Paris and Beijing.

2)
To go freelance, you’ll need at least a Master’s degree in a relevant subject (internatinal relations is usually the best). You’ll need to do internships to generate professional experience first. Once you’ve got your master’s you will probably have to do at least two six-month internships. Try getting them abroad with organisations such as the European Commission, European Council, the Council of Europe, Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE – an excellent organisation to do internships with due to the variety of places in which they operate), the United Nations, or one of its agencies (a good one here is the United Nations Development Programme). These are all excellent diplomatic organisations to work for after your internships.

You will need to keep your eyes peeled for jobs at entry level constantly. Keep track on sites such as unjobs.org, reliefweb.org, devnet, and eurobrussels. Most entry level jobs require at lest two to three years professional experience (which you can begin to gain through internships), but occasionally one pops up that doesn’t require as much experience.

Once you secure your first job, it will usually be for 5-7 year contracts, so you keep having to look for new jobs but the benefit here is that you can decide where you want to work. There are generally two types of contract here: seconded, or contracted. A seconded job is where you are employed by the Foreign Office on a temporary basis to represent the UK in an international organisation. These are hard to get, and you will need to get hold of the desk officer for secondments within the FCO to back you for the position. The other way is to go for a contracted job. These are easier to get but the seconded jobs are usually filled before the contracted ones, so there are less of them.

Don’t believe too much in the ‘it’s not what you know it’s who you know’ adage. On your journey, make sure you are reliable, professional, friendly and try to go out for drinks with colleagues when you can. Don’t be too pushy when trying to build your network. Believe in yourself remain optimistic. Amke sure you read the FT and the Economist as much as you can and keep plugged in to world affairs in your spare time.

Good luck.

Stewart McIntosh answers:

Bouncing Betty

The German S-mine (Schrapnellmine in German), also known as the Bouncing Betty, is the best-known version of a class of mines known as bounding mines. These mines launch into the air at about waist height and explode, propelling shrapnel horizontally at lethal speeds. The S-mine was an anti-personnel landmine developed by Germany in the 1930s and used extensively by German forces during World War II. It was designed to be used in open areas to attack unshielded infantry. Two versions were produced, designated by the year of their first production: the SMi-35 and SMi-44. There are only minor differences between the two models. The number indicates the year of introduction into service.

The S-mine entered production in 1935 and served as a key part of the defensive strategy of the Third Reich. Until production ceased with the defeat of Germany in 1945.
It was during the Allied actions in Europe that the S-mine gained its cynical nickname Bouncing Betty from American infantrymen.

However, incidents involving accidental explosions of landmines in North Africa, the former Warsaw Pact countries, France, and Germany still occur sporadically. North Africa and Eastern Europe have a particularly large amount of uncleared World War II era minefields, lost in the desert sands or forgotten by authorities. In Libya, for example, the Red Cross estimates over 27% of farmland is unusable due to World War II minefields. While German documentation says the S-mine had an effective lifespan of two to seven years once planted, the explosive charge could still operate in mines to this day.

Characteristics
The German S-mine was a steel cylinder less than 13 cm (5 inches) tall without its sensor, and only 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter. A steel rod protruding from the mine’s top held the main fuse, where its trigger or sensor was attached. The SMi-35 had a central fuze, while the SMi-44 had an offset fuze. It weighed roughly 4 kg (9 pounds), with the weight depending on whether it was loaded with the lighter powdered or the heavier poured TNT.[1]

The main charge of the mine used TNT as its explosive; the propelling charge was black powder. All triggers for the mine were designed to create a spark to set off a flammable fuse inside the device. The standard pressure sensor used a percussion cap for this purpose.[6]

The main fuze was designed to delay the firing of the propelling charge for roughly four seconds after the mine was triggered. The explosion of the propelling charge sent the mine upwards into the air, and activated three short-delay pellets between the propelling charge and the three detonators. These short-delay pellets slowed the mine’s detonation long enough for it to reach an appropriate height before exploding.

The standard pressure sensor was built to be activated if depressed by a weight of roughly 7 kilograms (15 pounds) or greater. This was to ensure it was not detonated by wildlife or natural impacts. The tripwire adapter for the mine was a shallow Y-shaped device, and would trigger the mine if the tripwire was pulled away from the mine.[

After the war, the American army developed their M16 mine directly from captured S-mine designs.[4]

The Soviet Union also based the design of its OZM series of landmines on the German S-mine.

After the end of WW1 Germany was greatly effected by the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Then of course came the Great Depression, which effected economies worldwide, but Germany suffered far worse.

These two factors gave rise to radical politics and allowed the Nazi’s in Germany to rise to power.

I want to become a fashion editor! Tips?

Hi

I have always been reading a lot of magazines such as Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Elle…
And since I’ve watched “the September issue” I am 100% determined to become a fashion editor.
Very often my friends ask me for style advice, and I know a lot about fashion designers and trends.
I speak fluent French and English and I’m willing to learn Italian as well.
Unfortunately I live in a small city in Belgium and I do not have the money to study in London, Paris or New York… I am now studying History of Art and then I will do a master degree in journalism, in a University of Belgium.
I’m scared that I won’t be able to work in a big fashion magazine (Vogue is my number 1 choice) coming from such a small country and studying in a small University… :/
We have a Elle in Belgium and of course I will be trying to land a summer internship there…

Any tips?

Stewart McIntosh answers:

Well its a tough one, see most of the editors get their by the old girls network the rest have to start through internships. Pink Panther is a little right only in that tea making will be involved, as will long hours little or no pay, and an atmosphere akin to the politeness in a gordon ramsay kitchen. It’s going to be pretty unglamorous,” a former assistant at Vogue said. “Mostly you end up steam-cleaning clothes for shoots, answering phones, opening mail.” well there you go.

A E is still a pass and some (very bad) Universities will let you in with E’s & D’s. Usually they only look at your top 3 A level grades so you have 3 A levels of C+ so you will be fine and if you get B,C,D (1 under target) that will still be 240 points. Dont worry too much just focus on your A levels thats what makes the biggest difference

Geography or French/Italian for last GCSE choice?

should i choose geography or French/italian for my last GCSEs option?
I’m an amazing linguist and lots of people recommend me doing another language (im fluent in Portuguese Brazil*1st language since im Brazilian*, English and Spanish) so as im very good at languages i thought i should do another language which would be French or Italian.
BUT then the school recommends everyone to do one Humanities (Geography, History Economics..) and i can definitely not do history or economics (because im veeeryy bad at both) so i thought maybe geography since im not so bad at it but i still DONT like it.
As ive started modeling like my mother did, many of my friends recommend me doing a language in case i ever go to another country to model.
I honestly dont see why geography would help me in any way in my life since all the things i like and am good at are things that are more artistic. Like in the future i either want to continue being a model, an interior designer or a fashion designer. Those three things are all the careers that i like the most, so i really dont think geography is going to be useful.
If this helps somehow, this were my other 3 GCSEs options:
Art
Textile
Spanish

and maths, english and science are compulsory.

So What do you guys think? Would geography be useful in any way for any of the careers im interested in? Which one of them should i choose Geo or French/Italian?

Stewart McIntosh answers:

If your school is in England, the reason for your school’s recommendation is probs cos of the new English baccalaureate. If you don’t care about getting that though, do another language if that is what you would prefer. I did French, German and Italian GCSEs and not Geography (though I did do History and RE). Like you, I am better at languages and enjoy them much more than Geography, especially physical Geography. As someone who doesn’t understand maps, I can totally empathise! I don’t regret my GCSE choices at all but then the English bac didn’t exist when I made them. I suppose it basically comes down to how much you care about getting the bac.
