On The Subject Of French Fashion History

Linda asks…
I need some help on a history project!?
Okay so I am doing a major project for school about the textile industry in world war II compared to the finance crisis today.
Any help, links, movies or whatever would be really help full. I am trying to get a bit of the french fashion world in there because I know that pretty well. But please help ![]()
The way I am going with is; What influence did the war have on the fashion industry, which fashion designers joined the war by producing uniforms for the army to survive?

Stewart McIntosh answers:
I am assuming you are talking about the boweavel that destroyed the cotton fields in the south. That is the only thing I can think of that comes close to the economic situation then in the textile field that would compare. The big difference though is that the economic crisis now is strictly due to greedy bastards who have thrived on hard working people who made them filthy rich. In contrast, the textile industry in the 30′s and 40′s was not hurt due to greed, instead it was nearly destroyed by a bug that is smaller than your little finger.

Sandy asks…
What school supplies should I buy?
I am taking French 2, Fashion Marketing, English, History, Chemistry, Dance 2, Geometry.
My problems are with being organized. :p

Laura asks…
Fashion students-Careers Advice!?
I know it sounds childish but i want to go into fashion when i’m older. particularly the design area. I want to know if these A-levels seem appropriate for this-Art Graphics/English Lit/French/Art History. or whether i should take a textiles A-Level that isn’t about fashion design at all, its about actual physicality of textiles. I am really confused? Would I be able to carry on into a career of fashion design if i took graphics instead of textiles? HELP!
P.S-I’m not just some silly little kid dreaming, I have to decide on these A-Levels by February…

Stewart McIntosh answers:
I think your A-level choice is spot on but even if it wasn’t your A-levels just give you a basis and if you are really committed then it doesn’t matter what you do so long as you pick the right degree choice, also the fashion industry is huge what exactly do you wan to do? If you are more into designing your choices are great if its more about being a stylist or merchandiser then you want to incorporate some business retail.
Also check the degree courses in fashion as there are hundreds pick a few that appeal to you and then read up on their entry requirements and course details that will help you decide your A-levels
good luck

Nancy asks…
Im doing my year 9 options soon and was wondering what i would pick to be a fashion designer! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Well pe,re,english, maths, science are essential! But you can take:
triple science or double
physical pe or b-tech pe
AND THEN……
You can pick (3 or 4 not sure) of these:
3d art
fine art
textiles
graphics
B-tech (bit of everything)
french
geography
history
food
child care
Ict
music
dance
drama
Think thats it.

Stewart McIntosh answers:
Ok first picking subjects at year 9, isnt the be all and end all. So i suggest taking subjects you enjoy doing, because you wanna get good GCSE’s and usually you get better marks in something you enjoy doing.
Textiles is a good subject to take for your career choice and maybe art. Then i would go for 2 more ‘acemdemic’ subjects, as you wanna be a fashion designer you could take french as France is big in the fashion industry paris etc. Then i would go for either geography or history.
Good luck

Ken asks…
Is it a good idea to choose ‘history’ as a theme for my Art A-level?
I have been told by other students that choosing something that I am interested in is key when it comes to Art A-level, which is why I’m currently considering history.
I’m not sure whether history has too much of a scope? I was thinking of focusing on the French Revolution.
I wanted to choose something different because everyone seems to be choosing things like ‘family’ or ‘fashion‘… I want to stand out.
If you have any ideas on things I could do with the French Revolution/history idea please let me know! Or if you have any ideas on which other options I could consider.
Thank you!

Stewart McIntosh answers:
The symbol of the revolution is Marianne – the female embodiment of France.
The revolution was also celebrated by contemporary French artists, see Jacques Louis David.
