Ministre d’Etat Confirms Referendum

France welcomes the commencement, as scheduled, of the referendum on self-determination in Southern Sudan. The holding of a free and transparent referendum constitutes an important step towards the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed in 2005 in Naivasha. We urge the parties concerned to honor their commitment to allowing the ballot to take place in an atmosphere of calm.

We commend the efforts undertaken by the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission and the UN Mission in Sudan over the last few weeks, notably with respect to voter registration and the delivery of referendum equipment to the polling stations.

France urges the governments of Sudan and Southern Sudan to continue their discussions regarding the post-referendum issues and to commit to maintaining peace between the north and the south, whatever the outcome of the referendum. This is the message that the Ministre d’Etat reaffirmed to her Sudanese counterpart, Ali Karti, during their meeting at the Quai d’Orsay on January 4.
