Winter sports: the economy of white gold
France, rich in the variety of its stations, today is a world leader in winter with 10 million visitors and 7 million practitioners including 2 million foreigners ski tourism.
The France has a unique infrastructure and ski stations distributed on its various mountainous massifs: with 357 stations, or 8.9% of the global capabilities, include three nations ski in the world, elbow to elbow with the Austria and the United States.
With a global turnover estimated at EUR 7 billion for the season 2007/2008 winter sports account for 18% of the French tourism economy. The number of jobs generated winter station is greater than 100,000, including 18 000 for one branch of ski areas.
In the mountainous massifs involved in these activities, can distinguish three groups of station:
-Large stations in altitude. They bring together the largest ski areas in the world, have a quality and guaranteed snow.
-Small and medium-sized stations. Their strengths lie in the quality of their natural landscapes and usability that animates.
-Nearby stations. They welcome regional and domestic customers.
Mountain tourism development is translated by the implantation of a fleet of lifts which places the France global ranks first with 18% of total supply. French know-how in this field are exports also well: the company that built the Vanoise Express – an aerial tramway linking the Plagne and les arcs ski areas with the largest capacity in the world (200 people) – completed by December 2010 the renovation of the “aerial tramway” in New York.
