Recent developments in the Middle East peace process
We have taken note of the Arab League’s position urging the Palestinians not to resume negotiations in the absence of a serious offer guaranteeing the end of the conflict and announcing the intention of the Arab nations to refer the issue of settlement activity to the UN Security Council.
France shares the Arab nations’ view that long-term failure is inconceivable given the dramatic consequences that it could have on the stability of the region. It urges the entire international community to help ensure the success of the American efforts to resume the peace process aimed at achieving a framework agreement with a view towards the creation of a viable and sovereign Palestinian State.
We believe that negotiation remains the best way to achieve this objective. Our position on settlement activity remains unchanged: it is in violation of international law, it is detrimental to the peace efforts and constitutes a threat to the two-State solution: ?settlement activity must stop.?
The Ministre d’Etat will receive George Mitchell, the U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, today in order to review the outcome of his recent tour of the region and to reaffirm to him our determination to work in close coordination with the American administration on this issue.
