Learn French

If you are living in France, it’s an imperative that you learn French if you want to be understood by your new neighbours. But even if you are only coming for a visit to France, it is quite important to know how to speak basic French.

Knowing how to speak the even just a few words of the language will give you a more enjoyable and meaningful trip. French students learn English as a second language in school, but verly little of that education is spent actually speaking English.  So you will also find that the French people understand any difficulties you may have speaking their language and they will more readily help you if you make some effort to converse with them in their own language.

To learn to speak basic French, it is quite easy to look for a tutor who is able to teach the French language. This is most effective because you can get instant feedback on your progress from the tutor.

However, if you are not able to set aside a regular time to meet with a tutor, you may like to join one of the many internet web sites where you can learn on line. You can communicate with an on line tutor on a daily basis if you wish, or as many times you prefer each week. You can choose the programme that you want from a large list of available programmes dependant entirely on your availability and your budget.

If you find that you’re too busy to commit your time this way, or maybe you don’t have easy access to the internet all the time, you may opt to buy CD;s or DVD’s.  These can then be listened to, or watched, whenever you have a spare moment. You could even copy them to a mobile player so that you may take your lessons with you.

Having access to these video or audio files can even be a good way to pass time. If you are waiting for someone in a restaurant or waiting to catch a plane, for example, you can tune in to your lessons and make that moment more productive. Waiting can be boring, but when you have something productive to do, it can reduce the tedium

These pre-recorded files are available in several different formats. There are those designed for your media player, i.e. mp3 or iPod. Others are designed for CD and DVD players. You can save the downloaded files to your machine and listen to them even when you are away from your home.

Whilst learning, you can make notes or write down each word that you will learn, that way you won’t easily forget them and cross reference them with a good French dictionary. Some of the more important parts of what you will learn in basic French are numbers, parts of speech and phrases.  These can make a significant difference to the pleasure of your stay in France as you will use them regularly.

You have the ability to choose which format is right for you… learning from a private tutor or opting for a recorded tutorial. Both of them can bring you success.
